The Siren

The Starbucks siren is one of the most recognizable logos around the world. The company was named after a character in the novel Moby Dick. The two tailed siren wearing a crown on the logo is a symbol from Greek mythology. The Starbucks siren is topless and has a double fish tail, and it has raised some eyebrows because of it. The logo has been adjusted to fit the corporate image. It has been simplified where you can't see any details of the siren, like before. This logo has worked because it has somehow become part of culture. Everyone is constantly taking photos of their cups and posting on Instagam, twitter and other social media, giving Starbucks the extra, and free publicity. The interesting thing about this symbol is that sirens are seen as brutal sociopaths who used to murder sailors because they were attractive. A siren would sing and make sailors so obsessed that they would crash into rocks and die. So the logo has a hint of obsession, addiction and death? Which makes sense of their customers who are addicted to coffee and have become obsessed with the company. Either way, this logo and company are successful in marketing, product and design and will be a long time.
